Professional cleanings and examinations

At Valley Ranch Family Dentistry, preventive visits are an opportunity to discuss changes, examine your teeth and gums and plan the care you need. Tell us about sensitivity, bleeding, discomfort, changes in your bite or anything that has been on your mind.

Your dentist recommends the timing of checkups based on your needs. A visit may include a review of your medical and dental history, an examination of teeth and existing restorations, assessment of gum health and discussion of home care. X-rays are recommended when they help answer a clinical question.

Why a different type of cleaning may be recommended

Routine preventive cleaning and scaling and root planing have different purposes. A routine cleaning supports ongoing care. Scaling and root planing is treatment below the gumline for people whose examination shows that it is needed.

Gum measurements, dental history and imaging can help your dentist explain whether the tissues supporting your teeth have been affected by periodontal disease. Ask to see the findings and understand why the proposed treatment is appropriate. A recommendation should come with a conversation about options, comfort, fees and follow-up.

Understanding periodontal disease

Periodontal disease affects the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. Plaque and hardened deposits can contribute to inflammation. Some people notice bleeding, swelling, persistent bad breath, recession or loose teeth; symptoms alone do not establish the diagnosis.

If treatment is recommended, ask what will happen during the visit and how your response will be reassessed. Local anesthetic may be used where appropriate. The number and timing of visits depend on the findings and your treatment plan.

Between visits

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth daily. Ask your dentist which tools and techniques suit your teeth and gums.

Questions are part of the visit

You can ask what the examination showed, how the treatment options differ and what is included in the quoted fee. If you are uncertain about a recommendation, request an explanation before deciding. Our office can help with appointment planning and questions about insurance or the discount plan.

Your examination may also include discussion of oral cancer screening and jaw or bite concerns, depending on your needs.

Your examination, medical history and goals help determine the right approach for you. Our team can explain the available options, timing and costs before you decide.

Your care, understood

Know what your cleaning is for.

An examination helps distinguish routine preventive care from treatment for gum disease. The right cleaning depends on your gum measurements, dental history and examination findings.

Questions to bring.

  1. What did my gum measurements show?
  2. Which cleaning do you recommend, and why?
  3. What should I do between visits?
